McDonald's Hot Mustard Recipe

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp dry mustard powder
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

Method

  1. Combine the 2 tbsp yellow mustard, 1 tbsp Dijon mustard, 1 tsp dry mustard powder, 3 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp hot sauce, ¼ tsp cayenne pepper, ¼ tsp garlic powder, ¼ tsp onion powder, and ¼ tsp salt in a small bowl and whisk for about 1 minute until smooth and glossy.
  2. Taste the sauce and adjust heat with a pinch more cayenne or a few extra drops of hot sauce, or add ½ tsp more honey if it tastes too sharp. Whisk again for 30 seconds.
  3. Let the sauce rest at room temperature for 5 minutes, then pour into a small serving bowl and stir once more before serving.

Notes

This sauce is mild to medium heat as written. If you're serving people who prefer something closer to the original McDonald's level of spice, start with the recipe as-is and add cayenne gradually — it's much easier to add heat than to take it away. The sauce thickens slightly in the fridge, which is normal; a quick stir brings it back together.
