KFC BBQ Sauce Recipe

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup white onion, finely minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp water

Method

  1. Melt 2 tbsp butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add 1/2 cup minced onion and cook for 5 minutes until soft. Add 2 cloves minced garlic and stir for 1 minute.
  2. Add 1 cup ketchup, 3 tbsp brown sugar, 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp mustard powder, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1/4 tsp salt, and 2 tbsp water. Stir until the sugar dissolves, about 1 minute.
  3. Raise heat to medium and simmer uncovered for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
  4. Remove from heat, adjust seasoning to taste, and transfer to a bowl or pour directly over chicken.

Notes

This sauce is easy to scale: just double every ingredient and use a larger saucepan. If you want a very smooth texture, let it cool slightly and blend it before serving. It keeps for up to 2 weeks refrigerated, so making a bigger batch is worth the extra few minutes.
