French Toast Recipe

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 3 minutes
Total Time 19 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices white bread (3/4 inch)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Powdered sugar, for serving
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Method

  1. Whisk together the 2 eggs, 1/3 cup milk, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1 tbsp sugar in a wide shallow bowl until smooth and pale yellow, about 30 seconds.
  2. Soak each bread slice in the custard for 20 to 30 seconds per side, pressing gently so the liquid absorbs through to the middle.
  3. Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the first 2 soaked slices, and cook 3 to 4 minutes on the first side and 2 to 3 minutes on the second side until both sides are deep golden brown.
  4. Melt the remaining 1 tbsp butter, soak and cook the remaining 2 slices using the same timing.
  5. Stack 2 slices per plate, dust with powdered sugar, and serve immediately with maple syrup.

Notes

Day-old bread gives you the best texture here since it soaks up the custard without going mushy. If you're feeding more than 2 people, keep finished slices warm on a baking sheet in a 200°F (95°C) oven while you cook the rest. The custard recipe doubles cleanly if you need it.
