Cracker Barrel Green Bean Recipe

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 50 minutes
Total Time 1 hour
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 4 strips thick-cut bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Method

  1. Cook the bacon pieces in a large pot over medium heat for about 5 minutes until crisp at the edges, then add the diced onion and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  2. Add the minced garlic and stir constantly for 60 seconds over medium heat until fragrant and just turning golden.
  3. Add the green beans, chicken broth, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to low, cover, and simmer for 35 to 40 minutes until the beans are very tender.
  4. Taste and adjust salt and pepper, then transfer to a serving dish with the bacon pieces and broth spooned over the top.

Notes

These beans are meant to be fully tender, not crisp, so don't pull them early if they still have snap. If your broth cooks off before the beans are done, add a splash more and keep the lid on. They reheat beautifully the next day with the broth kept in.
