Cracker Barrel Fried Apples Recipe

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 12 minutes
Total Time 22 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp granulated white sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water

Method

  1. Peel, core, and slice all 4 apples into 1/2-inch thick slices.
  2. Melt 3 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat, then stir in 3 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tbsp granulated sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, and 1/4 tsp salt for 30 seconds until dissolved.
  3. Add the apple slices, stir to coat, and cook over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes, until fork-tender.
  4. Stir 1 tsp cornstarch into 2 tbsp water, pour into the pan, and cook for 1 to 2 more minutes until the glaze thickens.
  5. Spoon into a serving bowl, pour remaining glaze over the top, and dust with a little extra cinnamon.

Notes

Granny Smith apples give the best results here because their tartness balances the sweet glaze, but any firm apple will work. The cornstarch slurry thickens quickly, so have it mixed and ready before you need it. Leftovers reheat well with a splash of water in a small pan over low heat.
